"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"

About
Karen Filthaut

I'm a Canadian artist that have called Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia home. I'm inspired by the natural beauty of the Canadian prairies and mountains. I work primarily in acrylics and plein air oils, using rich textures and expressive color to capture the mood and movement of the landscape.

Community Engagement & Leadership

Art has always been about more than just creating for me—it's also about building community. As President of the Sylvan Lake Art Society, I help organize events that bring local artists together and encourage public engagement with the arts. I also started the In the Footsteps of Monet Facebook group, where artists share weekly work and support each other in creative growth.

Educational Background & Teaching

My art education began with a year of Fine Arts at the University of Calgary and later evolved into specialized training in photo retouching. Teaching has become a fulfilling part of my practice—I’ve led beginner classes, senior-focused workshops, and sessions that emphasize the therapeutic power of painting. After receiving a liver transplant in 2015, I’ve come to view art as not just an outlet, but a form of healing.
